Q10. For a soil deposit having porosity (n) = 33% and specific gravity (G) = 2.60, the critical hydraulic gradient is:
Sol. Quick sand is a flow condition occurring in cohesionless soils. In this, if seepage pressure equal to submerged unit weight of soil, then effective stress reduces to zero and soil particles leaves the soil mass and flow along with water is termed as quick sand condition or liquefaction.
Sol. In consolidated drainage test, drainage is permitted during cell pressure as well as back pressure stage both, hence, the pore water pressure is zero in this case.
Sol. Relation between seepage velocity (V_s ) and discharge velocity (V) is given by –
Since n < 1, then seepage velocity is always higher than discharge velocity.
Sol. Friction piles are also called as ‘floating pile’. These piles are most effective in dense sand and used to transfer load through skin friction between the embedded surface of the pile and the surrounding soil.
Consistency index (I_C ) State
I_C>1 Solid or Semi-solid state
I_C<0 Liquid state
0 < I_C < 1 Plastic state
Sol. The upper most line of seepage in an earth dam is called phreatic line it separates the saturated soil mass from unsaturated soil mass and the pressure at or above phreatic line is atmospheric and below phreatic line is hydrostatic.
Sol. Given, Porosity (n) = 40% = 0.4
