What is the Minimum GATE score for NITs?

IIT Delhi has released the results of the GATE exam in the month of March and the students now are a step away from their next level. After the results, students have to check their score and if they have received the minimum GATE score, they can proceed to the next step that  of counseling to take admission to the desired college and program.

The students can check their scores and ranks on the official website of GATE in order to know the minimum cut-off marks and can move ahead accordingly.

Minimum GATE score released

The minimum GATE score for NITs, IITs, and similar other colleges has been released now. The minimum cut off marks for ME is 34.0, for CE it is 32.9, and it is 28.8 for EC.

The candidates need to score at least this minimum score in order to qualify for the next step for admission in NIT and other important colleges of the country.

GATE is conducted by the seven IITs across the country and each year lakhs of candidates appear for it so that they can get qualified to get admission in these reputed colleges. The syllabus is vast and hence the candidates need to prepare in a smart way so that nothing is left out. Also, as the exam has negative markings, it is important that the candidates appear in the exam with proper preparation.

How is the cut off marks calculated?

Now, it will be quite interesting to know about the calculation of the minimum cut off marks by GATE. It can depend on a number of different factors and a few of them are discussed below.

  • It depends highly on the number of people who are appearing for the exam.
  • It also depends on how difficult the GATE exam paper has been set.
  • Again, it also depends on the number of seats that are available in the colleges.
  • Lastly, the cut off marks also depend upon the category under which you are about to take admission to a particular college.

Though a general cut-off mark has been released, there can be different cut-off marks released by different colleges also depending upon the number of seats that they have. This can be known when the candidates apply to the respective colleges through the official website.

Options after GATE

Though most of the candidates aim at appearing for GATE so that they can get qualified to get admission in their desired colleges with their desired program, there are also a number of other options that candidates do have. There are a lot of candidates who choose to appear in GATE and get admission after it so that they can get stipend along with the studies and the course fees can get reduced down.

Also, there are a number of candidates who get qualified in the GATE exam with a rank of 100 and hence they get the opportunity to participate in the selection process arranged by the different PSUs of the country. There are some of the important sectors such as State Electricity Boards, and even some of the prestigious names such as BARC and ISRO that select candidates who have done really well in the GATE exam.

GATE 2020 Marks vs Rank: Know how to calculate

After the completion of the GATE exam in February this year, the most asked question by the candidates was about how they will be ranked based on the marks that they will obtain in the exam. Of course, it is quite important for the candidates to check the ranking that they have got in the exam so that they can estimate what opportunities they hold ahead.

Though the brochure offers an explanation about the normalization of the score, the candidates wish to know the ratio of marks vs rank.

Mainly, the ranking depends on the type of exam the candidate has appeared for that is a single session exam or multiple sessions exam. For one session paper, the score is calculated based on the actual marks scored by the candidate. On the other hand, in the case of the multiple session paper, there will be a calculation of the normalized marks based on the raw marks scored by the candidate.

GATE 2020 Marks vs Rank

Detailed information about GATE marks vs rank can be understood based on last year’s details.

The scorecard of GATE is valid for a time period of three years. If a candidate has scored 400 or lesser, this can allow the candidate in getting admission to colleges with lower grades. On the other hand, candidates having a rank of AIR 400 will be able to get admission to almost all the IITs across the country.

To be very specific, it can be said that the marks are calculated out of 100 while the ranking is calculated out of 1000. For example, candidates scoring more than 90 in mechanical, more than 80 in CSE, more than 90 in civil, 73 or above in electronics, and more than 91 in electrical will be in the rank of 1 to 10.

Similarly, candidates getting 87-92, 75-80, 85-90, 67-73, and 87-91 in mechanical, CSE, civil, electronics, and electrical respectively will be there in the ranking of 10 to 50.

Again, candidates getting 85-87, 72-75, 78-85, 63-67, and 84-87 in the subjects respectively will be ranked in between 50 – 100 and candidates getting 82-85, 68-72, 74-78, 60-63, and 81-84 respectively are ranked in between 100 – 200.

A good rank in GATE

Apart from the confusion about ranking vs score, the candidates also get concerned about which rank is actually good for them.

Normally, candidates having a rank under 100 get to appear for the selection process of the PSUs. Again, candidates under the ranking of 200 have a good chance of getting admission in the IIT College of their preference.

Though the rankings offer the candidates a good chance of getting through some of the topmost positions of PSU, it also has to be understood that just having a good rank does not work. There are selection procedures that consist of Group Discussion and Personal Interview of the candidates. Hence, it is important that the candidates should also prepare for the Group Discussion and Personal Interview round along with the examination.

Similarly, candidates having a good rank for IIT admissions also need to do good in the interview of the college in order to get admission in the college that they prefer.

GATE is known to be one of the toughest exams due to its vast syllabus and negative markings. But also it offers a great opportunity for candidates who are able to crack through the exam with a good rank. There is no such age limit and hence there are a number of candidates who might appear for the exam, a number of times, to get through a good rank.

What is the best time to start the GATE preparation?

Candidates preparing for the GATE exam follow different strategies to be successful, and one thing you must make sure is that there will be no magic to guarantee GATE exam success. According to the experts, your hard work, proper planning, and start preparing early for the exam will help you crack it. It will bring a maximum chance of being successful.

Every year, in February the GATE exam is held, which is also a start of the career of the students. If you are in the engineering field, then that means you hardly have six months if you start preparing in the 4th year. However, according to the experts, it is good to start in the 3rd year for preparation.

The right time to start preparing:

The right time is the specific time when you feel you should start for it. If you prepare with a burden on your mind, then you may not show much determination for the work. Also, there is no exclusive range for the age you should start preparing and apply for the exam. In the results, you will find candidates of different ages. Also, there is no fixed time that you will surely achieve success with a proper hour to start things. It depends upon how determined you are for preparation.

Reasons why you should start preparing early in 3rd year

  • If you start preparing early, you will be able to cover up essential topics very profoundly. In your field, you would be new to many subjects, and so it’s necessary to clear all the concepts deeply. This will clarify the latest topics. Thus you get more than enough time for explaining basics.
  • In the final year, if you have little knowledge of the basics, then it will be easy for you to capture them in your mind very well. Preparation leads to less struggle for further phases. You even feel confident to solve the issues if some new concept arises.
  • The highest-scoring subjects that appear in the GATE exam are mostly from the 3rd and 4th years. Thus, if you will start itself in the 3rd year, then it helps you with a double benefit. You will prepare with ethical concepts in the 3rd year and master while reaching 4th year.
  • With ample time, you can set your goal for each subject and solve a good number of questions. Also, you can even get time to look at the previous year’s issues or start with sample papers to know the question paper level. For a technical subject, you must hardly give one month for preparation. After that, try and solve subject mock tests and sample papers.
  • You need useful resources for the preparation of the exam. Thus it is essential to gather valuable resources in that case. Go through the best books and various online video lectures to collect all the required information. Now prepare proper notes for this. Thus to avoid deciding in a hurry, it’s better to start before the time goes haywire.
  • As you start early, you will get enough time for the revision. The final year is the most crucial time to focus on the GATE exam and our studies too. Thus you don’t have much time to prepare for each of them. But prior preparation can help you in making a timetable for revision of concepts.

How to Prepare for the GATE Exam 2020: Tips & Strategy

How to Prepare for the GATE Exam 2020: Tips & Strategy to crack GATE Exam

Every year around 9 lac students apply for the GATE exam to enhance their career in further research work or post-graduation. However, every Exam has a proper pattern to follow, and there are techniques to score well in this difficult to crack Exam. Candidates that are entirely motivated towards their preparation can only crack them. It is because they follow a specific strategy to keep themselves prepared for it. However, the preparation ways are different for everyone, but the techniques to start and end are the same throughout. For GATE targeting students, we here bring a formulated strategy.

Focus on the pattern

In the three hours exam, there are a total of 65 questions. This Exam is conducted online, with a total of 100 marks. The attended mode of the Exam is online. You will have to answer both objective and subject answers. For your reference, you may find information on the Gate Website. It will help you in assuring yourself of the types of questions and patterns of the Exam.

Get informed with a weightage of essential topics.

The syllabus of the gate exam depends upon your field of study. Thus you must go through the exam pattern related to your choice and check which one is the most important to have high weightage in scoring. Also, you can even check for assistance in subjects. Go through sample papers or previous year question patterns for this.

Gather material for studying

It’s always better to refer to only one or a maximum of two books for preparing a competitive exam. But make sure the books you are choosing must be high class. Many students also prefer online courses to help or refer to video lectures. It adds a high-quality study.

Prepare according to the daily target.

To prepare for the GATE exam, you must spend four to eight months on it. It depends upon the time you can spend in one day. As the date of the exam is approaching, you must practice daily with the weekend practice for previous year question papers and sample papers. It will be beneficial for you if you can prepare with the maximum daily targets.

How to prepare in the last minutes of preparation time?

The last minutes are not to cover new topics but to revise the old captured concepts in the memory. Attempting new topics may ruin your prior learning. Admit cards will be out at that time. Take a print of that and visit your exam center. If the exam center is in your city, then it’s well and good but to avoid the latency in your reach to another city, you must visit the exam center one day before. It helps to avoid hassle to reach.

Time management

Each second to prepare for an exam is very crucial. To cover the whole syllabus, students must make a timetable that will help them study every topic.

Preparing through Mock Tests

Mock tests are significant that even let you know how to manage Exam attempting time. Solve at least one mock test in three hours and then go through your performance for once.

Points to Ponder

It’s not that easy, but it becomes accessible to prepare for the GATE exam with a formulated strategy. Make sure your study material, time management, preparation techniques, etc. all the concepts are clear before you start.
