Is Gate necessary for M.Tech?

A number of students who have passed out B.Tech or similar programs or even are in the last semester have a major question of whether they need to appear for GATE for further studies or not.

Generally, there is no such strict rule that you have to appear for the exam. There are a number of private colleges available today where students can get admission in M.Tech without appearing for the GATE. But if you are willing to get admission in some of the best colleges in the country such as IITs, and similar others, GATE becomes the only medium.

Why GATE is necessary?

GATE is conducted by the seven IITs across India so that students cracking through the exam with the right score can seek admission in their desired college.

Candidates who have completed their M.Tech program often are known to have a great career ahead. But most of the companies looking forward to hiring M.Tech graduates wish the candidates to would had been graduated from some renowned colleges such as MIT. Hence, the very first priority of any aspirant is to seek admission to MIT and IIT colleges for which GATE is an important thing.

Benefits of GATE

Apart from getting recruited by the topmost of PSU and other companies, there are also a number of other benefits that the candidates qualifying GATE do get.

  • Candidates who have qualified GATE with a rank of 200 or better get the opportunity to get admission in their desired college. Getting into IITs and other similar colleges is already a matter of honor for the students.

  • Candidates who have cracked through GATE to get admission in the IITs or MIT are qualified to get a stipend for their study. This means they get an amount of Rs. 15000 to Rs. 30000 per month depending upon a number of factors such as the rank and other the college applied for.

  • Apart from the stipend amount, there are also other facilities offered to the candidates such as accommodation at the cost of the college. If the candidates do not stay in the accommodation offered by the college, they get qualified to get an HRA amount per month along with the stipend amount.

  • Of course, when the candidate is earning along with studies, the course fee already gets reduced and this is a great offer for any student who wishes to have education in higher studies.

Students who do not qualify in GATE

Though each year lakhs of candidates appear for GATE, only a few of them are able to rank well. This is because the exam is quite tough and the candidate has to prepare from a huge syllabus. But this does not mean that the candidates who have not qualified GATE cannot continue their M.Tech education. There are a number of private colleges that offer the education of M.Tech without checking out the results of GATE. The only difficulty here lies that they might charge a huge amount of course fees.

Also, there are a number of candidates who have the nag of cracking GATE and getting admission in the IITs only. When GATE does not have any age criteria, there are so many candidates who appear for the exam a number of times till the moment they do not crack through hit to get admission in their desired college.

Thus, the GATE is not actually necessary for M.Tech. But it is necessary if you wish to get admission in the topmost prestigious colleges of India such as IIT for your M.Tech or relevant programs.

Is one year sufficient for GATE preparation?

GATE or Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is conducted every year for the candidates aspiring to take admission in the top IITs of India. Candidates cracking through the exam are eligible to get admission in the course of M.E or M.Tech in any of the renowned IITs of the country.

Applying for GATE

Candidates who have successfully attained the cut off marks are only eligible to go for the next level and that is the interview round based on which they can get placed in different IITs of the country.

How tough is the GATE exam?

The toughness of cracking the GATE exam depends upon person to person and how they have been preparing for the exam. No doubt, it is a difficult test as each year lakhs of candidates apply for the exam for just a few seats that are available in the IIT colleges. Also, there are a number of times when the candidates may not get admission in the desired college due to the lack of marks obtained in the exam.

But this does not mean that the exam cannot be cracked. Also, there are many candidates who have prepared for the exam within a year and have appeared for it and have cracked it to get admission in the IIT College that they have desired for.
